This convent of Benedictine nuns was founded circa 740. The convent existed as a Benedictine community until 1485. From 1487-1803 the convent belonged to the Brigitine order.

 
Manuscript Sources
 

The convent of Altomünster preserves a copy of the rule of S. Brigit, dating from 1491, (D. 1), and an Antiphonal and Gradual, (G. 4) circa 1486 owned by Apolonia Tucherin. The university library in Augsburg preserves the Sermo angelicus of Brigit of Sweden, dated to 1529 and written by Ursula Klöblin, Oett.-Wall. III. 2.8o15. The Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz preserves a manuscript entitled "Die geistliche Padstube," Germ. 4o405, as well as another with the intial words, "Distinct. Bibl.," Lat. 4o479, which dates from the twelfth century. The University library in Graz may possess a Psalter from the convent, written by Conradus and dating to c. 1497, (#1631). The Hauptstaatsarchiv in Munich preserves the monastery's chronicle, KL Altomünster Nr. 29, and a fragment, KL Altomünster, Lit. 361/2. Additional works are preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Munich, Cgm 36, 39, 182, 786, 825, 5513, 5612, 7401, Clm 2933-2966, 27177, 28812, 29260/4, 29265/6, 29311/23, 29315/13, 29315/81, 29317/4, 29318/6, 29319/12, 29321/1, 29322/14, 29322/146, 29382/4, 29400/4, 29440/8, 29505/31, 29510/41, 29615/9, 29750/2, and 29893/4. University library in Munich also holds manuscripts from the community, including miscellanies and a processional, 4o165a, 4o176, 8o191, and 8o247. A Psalter from the twelfth century, which may come from this convent, is held in the Pierpont Morgan Library, M. 645.
