Miscellaneous Information

This community needs verification. Only John Leland attests to the presence of women at St. Petroc's (The itinerary of John Leland in or about the years 1535-1543, vol. 1). The dates when women would have been present are equally uncertain. The male community apparently was founded in the early Saxon period, refounded under the rule of Benedict and destroyed in 981 by a Danish raid. A congregation of Augustinian canons established themselves in 1124-1125(The Origins of the Austin Canons and their Introduction into England, pp. 118-119).

Note that Foot states that "there are no grounds for including this house among the female religious houses of later Anglo-Saxon England" (Veiled Women, vol. 2, 43).
